My Autobiography

This will be A Windy Day

If you were to go to my childhood home, three things would happen: My mom would open the door and ask who you are (in an undescipherable Liverpool accent). She’d hug you and offer you some type of booze if you answered, “a person who might hire your daughter.” And you’d be led to a basement filled with boxes of my old stories, beginnings of stories, and the originals of my most famous works, including A Windy Day (Children's Playmate Magazine, Sept. 1992) and Red Ankles (Mastricola Elementary School Young Authors winner, 1994).

After publishing my first poem at age 5, I dabbled in short fiction with a variety of unfinished works that all began “Kelly woke up to the bright sun streaming in her open bedroom window. Today was going to be crazy, but she didn’t know it yet.”

In the late 90s and early 00s, I turned to personal essays in the form of diaries. These unreleased writings feature some of my darkest work, which explored unrequited crushes, bitchy tweens, and whether stuffing a bra was detectable by the average teenage boy. Years later, Taylor Swift would steal many of my personal musings for her award-winning songs. (Lawsuit pending.)

College brought late nights, bad liquor, and a professor who called my writing “prolific” before giving me a B+. There was no time for creativity; just lots of procrastination and last-minute papers.

After college, I enjoyed a brief stint in Paris, Corsica, Greece, Italy, and Wales, then moved to the North End of Boston and promptly spent the $10,000 my grandfather left me on expensive Italian dinners. Then, on a whim, I applied to graduate school.

I received my Master’s in journalism in 2010, followed a boyfriend to Charleston, SC where we broke up, and wrote a food column for the city’s alt weekly. When I returned to Boston I moved in with my brother (not recommended) and began my career as an underpaid, overworked copywriter.

Gratefully, I had found my niche. As the money got better, so did I. Today, I’m a creative copywriter specializing in concept development, branding, and out-of-the-box campaigns. So when your 5-year-old tells you she wants to be a writer/singer/billionaire app developer someday, encourage her and keep everything she writes/records/designs so you can show her future potential employers the boxes full of crap down in your basement, too.
